University Boosts Research to Propel Civilian Nuclear Power in Ethiopia

On June 7, 2025, ENA reported from Addis Ababa that research activities aimed at harnessing nuclear technology for healthcare, agriculture, and power generation are underway in Ethiopia, as stated by the Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU).
The Head of the Nuclear Technology Center at University, Derejaw Ayele, informed ENA that the institution has set up an excellence center aimed at helping the nation harness nuclear technology as a source of energy.
Recently, the university has been named the African Nuclear Science Center, marking a significant step forward for conducting research in nuclear technology, he mentioned.
He mentioned that the center will enhance its research partnerships with nations home to renowned experts and leading institutions in the field of nuclear technology expertise and facilities.
As per Derejaw, research initiatives are presently being conducted across several pertinent fields.
Tewodros Abebaw, who is pursuing nuclear science engineering at AASTU as a second-year student, voiced his positive outlook regarding the increasing scholarly attention towards this domain. He remains hopeful for the advancement of nuclear technology education in Ethiopia.
The initiative offers a chance to cultivate proficient experts in nuclear science, enabling them to foster the nation's progress, he mentioned.
In late April, a three-party accord was signed among AASTU, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and Tsinghua University from China. This pact aims at establishing the African Nuclear Science and Technology Center with AASTU taking the lead role.
