Indigenous Groups Insist on New State Creation
The Remo community has restated their steadfast call for the establishment of Remo State from within the current administrative boundaries. Ogun State , with Sagamu suggested as its potential capital.
They pointed out separate ethnic identity, financial self-sufficiency, and infrastructure growth as strong reasons for their request.
A joint declaration was issued by the Chairman of the Remo Committee on State Creation, Aare Kola Oyefeso; Aare Gbo-Gbo-Gbo of Remo Land; and the committee secretary, Wole Awe. In this statement, they conveyed the collective resolve and solidarity among the residents of Remo as they pursue their ambition for state status.
The declaration was made at the request of the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remo Land, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, along with traditional leaders, elected officials, high-ranking chiefs, professionals, and various other members involved in Remo affairs.
As stated, "Remo has met all the criteria necessary for establishing a new state: economic viability, prepared infrastructure, growth prospects, territorial size, and most importantly, the agreement of its population."
The Committee stressed that the drive for statehood is not based on "timeless emotion" but rather on historical realities and administrative reasoning.
The revelation indicated that previous efforts to achieve state formation were hampered by internal conflicts regarding the suggested name and capital city.
The committee also remembered that in 2009, the Remo and Ijebu regions were unable to agree on a shared statement.
"While the Ijebus put forward their own proposal for an Ijebu State with Ijebu-Ode as the capital, the Remos submitted a distinct petition advocating for a Remo-Ijebu State and suggesting Ikenne serve as its capital. This split eventually deprived both parties of their chance," the statement said.
In reference to the support shown for unity documents in both 2020 and 2024 by the Awujale of Ijebu-Land and the Akarigbo of Remo-Land, the Committee characterized this action as "merely symbolic and harmless." They emphasized that real initiatives aimed at forming new states extend well past mere backing from traditional rulers.
"Remo continues to be a Republican entity and has never experienced autocratic governance," the statement further noted.
The Committee emphasized the swift expansion of Sagamu and nearby regions, underlining their crucial closeness to Lagos, strong industrial base, and well-developed transport connections.
"Remo rises high, towering over the other towns in Ogun East. Our preparedness is unparalleled," the statement proclaimed.
The statement also highlighted the existence of a functional airport in Remo Central, serving both cargo and passenger aircraft—a facility that could alleviate strain on Lagos' aviation facilities and enhance local connectivity.
Regarding revenue prospects, the Committee confirmed that Remo substantially boosts Ogun State’s locally generated income and possesses the fiscal capability to operate autonomously.
“We are not seeking to depend on federal allocations; Remo can stand on its own,” it said
