Polio Resurgence Sparks Concern in Pakistan as Virus Spreads Widely

On May 5, reports indicate that poliovirus is circulating within Pakistan. Laboratory analysis from samples across 18 different districts has revealed evidence of the virus, signaling an imminent risk of a polio outbreak. Confirmatory tests detected the presence of the virus in wastewater samples. The National Institute of Health verified these findings. Specimens were gathered throughout April from various locations around the country. Notably, traces of the virus have been identified in key urban centers such as Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta. Additionally, several other regions have reported positive test results for the virus.
Pakistan remains one of only two remaining polio-endemic countries. The number of cases decreased last year. However, in 2024, there were 74 reported instances. As of now in 2025, three cases have been recorded so far. Polio has the potential to lead to paralysis. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for this disease.
The most effective protection comes from vaccination. Recently, numerous children in Pakistan received vaccinations. In April, a drive successfully inoculated 45.4 million youngsters. This accomplishment was largely due to frontline workers' efforts. Additionally, parents were crucial contributors to this success.
A new vaccination campaign will commence shortly, running from May 26 through June 1. The objective is to immunize another batch of 45.4 million children. Parents are advised to make sure their kids receive vaccinations. Each child requires this protective measure.
