The Story of Claudia, Find Her Identity in the Struggle Against Breast Cancer

At the age of 26, Claudia, a makeup artist from Surabaya, found a lump on her breast. At first, she didn't suspect anything because it looked like a small, hard protrusion. However, the lump grew quickly, and eventually, she decided to see a doctor in Singapore.

The examination results showed something she had never imagined: stage IV breast cancer. The cancer had spread to the lungs, lymph nodes, and bones. Although she had prepared herself by reading various information, Claudia admitted she was still shocked. The most surprising thing for her was when she found out that her cancer cells had spread to other organs.

After undergoing genetic testing, doctors found that Claudia has a BRCA1 gene mutation, a gene that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Yet, she maintains a healthy lifestyle: she does not smoke, does not drink alcohol, rarely eats fast food, and exercises regularly.

Struggle Against Cancer

Claudia underwent chemotherapy and left breast removal surgery (mastectomy). However, her condition deteriorated after receiving treatment in China. She experienced paralysis in her left hand due to cancer cells pressing on the spinal nerves, and new spread appeared in the right breast.

She does not deny that undergoing cancer treatment is a tough struggle. Physically, she is weakened, the side effects of chemotherapy cause her body to change, and her mental strength is tested. However, amidst the pain, she learns to remain optimistic and not lose hope.

Fear of Losing One's Identity

After undergoing a mastectomy, Claudia once felt like she had lost part of herself. "The breasts are one of a woman's assets. So when they were removed and at that time I was not yet married, I felt like an incomplete woman," she said.

These feelings were worsened by others' opinions. She felt her activities were restricted, even labeled as "a sick person." Claudia once was confused about her place in society, until at one point she became tired of all the stigma.

Strengthening Support

In difficult times, family and spouse's support become the greatest source of strength. Her lover, who is now her husband, has always been by her side since the beginning of the treatment.

"Once he said, 'I believe you can recover.' If he believes in you, why shouldn't I believe in myself?" said Claudia.

That sentence became an important reminder for Claudia to keep moving forward. She learned that love and sincere support can be the most effective medicine in the healing process.

Finding Identity Through the World of Beauty

Chemotherapy effects made Claudia lose her hair and experience physical changes such as moon face. However, small things like finding a suitable wig helped restore her self-confidence.

"Once I wore the right wig, my friends said I looked really natural, just like before. From there, I started to find my identity again," she said.

This is Claudia, who is dedicated to her profession as a makeup artist. The beauty world is not just a job for her, but also a form of therapy. She feels happy being able to make others look confident, while also healing herself.

Sharing Hope with Others

Through social media, Claudia is now actively sharing stories and education about breast cancer. She hopes her story can be an inspiration for other women who are fighting.

For Claudia, this journey is not just about fighting the disease, but about rediscovering the meaning of life.

"Never give up. Sometimes it does feel tiring, but believe me, as long as we are still alive, there is always hope," he said.
