Peeking into Janice Tjen's Wild Progress and Journey: Last Year Ranked 578th in WTA, Now Enters Top 53 in the World

- Janice Tjen has officially become the second-best female tennis player in Indonesian history by entering the world No. 53 WTA ranking. Her current position shows how amazing the progress Janice has made in the last year, considering that at the end of 2024, her ranking was still 578th in the world.

Janice Tjen ranked 53rd in the world after winning her first WTA Tour singles title at the Chennai Open 2025. She became champion after defeating Kimberley Birrell in a 120-minute match with a score of 6-4, 6-3 at the SDAT Tennis Stadium, India on Sunday (2/11) night.

Janice Tjen's success as champion at the Chennai Open 2025 has placed her at world No. 53 in the WTA ranking as of Monday (11/3). Her ranking has jumped 29 places from the previous week.

Being ranked 53rd in the world is a remarkable achievement for Janice Tjen in closing an extraordinary year. Especially since she is the first Indonesian tennis player to win a WTA Tour singles title in 23 years, following Angelique Widjaja at the Pattaya Open in 2002.

World No. 53 ranking also made Janice Tjen the second-highest achievement by any Indonesian player on the professional tour. Only Yayuk Basuki achieved a higher ranking, when the legend was ranked 19th.

Janice Tjen's achievements are truly remarkable. Because in the same month last year, her WTA ranking was still outside the top 500. Specifically, she was world No. 578 at the end of 2024.

However, in the past year, Janice Tjen has achieved many accomplishments and remarkable performances. She reached nine finals in the ITF tour series, six of which resulted in championship titles in the singles category.

Janice has participated in the ITF tour from January 13 to August 10, 2025. These achievements have earned Janice Tjen the opportunity to compete in the 2025 US Open, although she will have to go through the qualifying rounds.

However, Janice made good use of the opportunity. She won three qualification matches to enter the main draw. Then, in the round of 128, Janice pulled off a big surprise by successfully defeating Veronika Kudermetova from Russia.

Janice Tjen's journey ended in the 64th round. She was forced to surrender to her idol from England, Emma Raducanu, who also won the grand slam tournament in the 2021 edition.

Janice Tjen's success continues. She made her debut on the WTA Tour by participating in the WTA 250 Sao Paolo (SP) Open 2025. Moreover, Janice immediately advanced to the final, although she eventually fell to French tennis player Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah.

Returning to Janice Tjen's trend, she then continued her brilliant run by advancing to the main draw of the 2025 China Open WTA 1000. She won two qualification matches, then fell in the 128th round against senior player Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus).

Janice Tjen's performance temporarily dropped in the following days. She could only advance to the 32nd round in the WTA 125 Suzhou Open 2025 in the singles event. However, Janice immediately redeemed her performance in the WTA 125 Jinan Open 2025.

As a top three seed, Janice Tjen was able to win her first WTA title at the 2025 Jinan Open. She won five matches in the tournament, which is categorized as a WTA Challenger.

Janice Tjen then experienced inconsistency again. She immediately lost in the first match of the WTA 250 Guangzhou Open 2025 qualification phase. But eventually, Janice Tjen made a comeback and showed her best performance to win the Chennai Open 2025.

The ups and downs of the game are what make Janice Tjen extremely happy to win the Chennai Open 2025. She is relieved that she has finally been able to obtain her first WTA Tour title in her career.

"Saya sangat happy bisa menang kali ini karena kekalahan sebelumnya sangat menyakitkan," said Janice Tjen, as cited from the official WTA website, Tuesday (11/4).

"I managed to reach the final at the Sao Paulo WTA 250, but fortunately today, I won," she added.

So, what is the secret behind Janice Tjen's rising performance in the last year? She said, there isn't any.

"I don't think there's any secret. I think it's just about working hard, trying to improve every aspect of my game, week by week. I also try to learn from previous losses and from the matches I have won," he said.

Janice Tjen's career advancement was unexpected for many people. Including herself, who did not expect to be at this point now as the second-best singles player in the history of Indonesian tennis.

"I think this is unexpected. On paper, the ranking has slightly increased, but I'm not too focused on the numbers. I just try to work and see what will happen. My coach and I haven't discussed the ranking and such things much," said Janice.

"we just want to continue developing, what we can do better, and since the beginning we have agreed not to discuss the rankings until a year later, and we can look back to see where we stand," he added.

That streak of achievements is not yet complete. Because Janice, who also plays in the doubles sector, has also made remarkable achievements in the past year.

That is, reaching seven ITF finals, four of which resulted in championship titles, then once winning the WTA Challenger Suzhou Open 2025 together with Aldila Sutjiadi, as well as winning two WTA 250 titles at the Guangzhou Open 2025 together with Katarzyna Piter (Polandia) and the Chennai Open 2025 together with Aldila Sutjiadi.

WTA ranking of Janice Tjen in the doubles sector has soared. She is now ranked 85th in the world, whereas last year she was at 843rd position.
