Trump Warns Musk: Backing Democrats Could Bring 'Serious Consequences' - International Edition (English)

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump indicated he had no desire to mend ties with his erstwhile ally and one-time campaign supporter, Elon Musk. Trump cautioned Musk that he might encounter "severe repercussions" should he choose to support the opposing side.

During a telephone interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump stated that he does not plan to reconcile with Musk. When directly queried about whether this meant his relationship with the multi-billionaire head of Tesla and SpaceX had ended, Trump replied, "Yeah, I'd say so."

I am preoccupied with other matters," Trump went on. "As you know, I won a landslide election. I provided him with numerous advantages well before these events took place. During my initial term, I also offered him several opportunities and essentially rescued him. Therefore, I do not plan on engaging with him.

Amid speculation about Musk potentially supporting Democratic lawmakers and candidates during the 2026 midterm elections, the US president delivered a cautionary statement.

"If he goes ahead with it, he will face the repercussions," Trump said to NBC, but did not specify what these consequences might entail. Musk's enterprises hold numerous profitable government agreements.

This development follows a dramatic rift in the relationship between the US president and the globe’s wealthiest individual, sparked by criticism from Musk regarding Trump's budget bill. This critique was initially shared by Musk on his social media platform X earlier in the week.

Musk cautioned that the legislation would lead to an increased federal deficit and labeled it as a "repulsive monstrosity."

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office states that this legislation would cut both spending and taxes; however, it would result in approximately 10.9 million additional individuals lacking health coverage and could increase deficits by around $2.4 trillion within ten years.

On Thursday, Trump criticized Musk’s forceful response to the "big beautiful bill" currently awaiting approval from Congress. Soon after, they started exchanging harsh personal jabs on social media platforms, prompting both the White House and Republican congressional leadership to hurriedly evaluate the potential consequences of their feud.

As the exchange escalated, Musk proposed that Trump ought to face impeachment and alleged without providing proof that authorities were hiding details regarding the president’s connections with the notorious pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. However, the CEO of Tesla seemed to retract this statement by removing his related tweet concerning Epstein over the weekend.

In an interview with "manosphere" comedian Theo Von, U.S. Vice President JD Vance attempted to minimize the conflict. He told Von that Musk was committing "a huge error" by targeting Trump, describing Musk as an "emotional person" who gets easily frustrated.

"I hope that someday Elon returns to the fold. Perhaps this isn’t feasible at present since he has become extremely radical," Vance stated.

Vance referred to Musk as "an incredible entrepreneur" and stated that Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, aimed at reducing public expenditure and resulting in layoffs or displacement for thousands of employees, was "highly effective."

The US Vice President said the bill's central goal was not to cut spending but to extend the 2017 tax cuts approved in Trump’s first term.

It’s a solid bill," Vance stated. "But it’s far from flawless.
