Quake Shakes Afghanistan: 4.3 Magnitude Tremor Rattles the Nation

Kabul [Afghanistan], May 3 (ANI): On Saturday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 shook Afghanistan, according to a statement from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
According to the NCS, the earthquake happened at a relatively shallow depth of 15 kilometers, which makes it prone to aftershocks.
On a tweet from X, the NCS stated, "Magnitude EQ: 4.3, Date & Time: 03/05/2025 at 13:20:36 IST, Latitude: 36.52 N, Longitude: 71.20 E, Depth: 15 km, Epicenter: Afghanistan."
Shallow earthquakes pose a higher risk because they unleash their energy nearer to the Earth’s surface, resulting in intense ground vibrations and heightened destruction of buildings along with greater loss of life. In contrast, deep earthquakes tend to dissipate much of their force before reaching the surface, making them less hazardous despite still being capable of generating significant seismic activity.
On Friday, an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook Afghanistan, according to a statement from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
According to the NCS, the earthquake took place at a depth of 150 kilometers.
On a tweet from X, NCS stated, "Magnitude EQ: 4.5, Date & Time: February 5th, 2025 at 20:20:58 IST, Latitude: 35.00 North, Longitude: 68.27 East, Depth: 150 km, Area: Afghanistan."
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Afghanistan continues to be at high risk from various natural calamities such as seasonal floods, landslides, and earthquakes.
UNOCHA observed that these recurrent earthquakes in Afghanistan compound the challenges faced by vulnerable communities, who are already struggling with years of conflict and inadequate development. This has significantly eroded their capacity to withstand various concurrent crises.
Afghanistan frequently experiences strong seismic events, with the Hindu Kush mountain region being seismically active and witnessing earthquakes annually, as reported by the Red Cross.
Afghanistan lies at the intersection of multiple fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, particularly one cutting right through Herat city. This strategic positioning atop various active faults within the collision area of these two major tectonic plates renders it highly prone to earthquakes. The meeting and pushing together of these massive landmasses result in regular seismic events. (ANI)
