Although ten years have gone by, the legacy of His Imperial Majesty Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, continues to resonate within Nigeria’s royal circles, academic institutions, and realms of cultural exchange. Recently, an elaborate press conference took place at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island where the departed Ooni of Ife was prominently honored.

The elaborate launch of festivities commemorating the tenth anniversary since the passing of Oba Sijuwade has stirred great anticipation within Nigeria’s cultural and traditional spheres. This event serves as a significant revival of culture, aiming to reignite the late monarch’s profound impact throughout the country and further abroad.

Led by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, with Co-Chairmanship from His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR (Ojaja II), and His Eminence Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, CFR, who is the Sultan of Sokoto, the ceremony aimed at reflecting on past traditions and reshaping them for future generations. At the press conference, HRH Oba Muraina Adebanjo Adedini, the Asoya of Isoya, represented the Ooni of Ife, highlighting the significant commitment of royalty to this initiative.

The press conference began with poignant comments from Prince Adejuwon Sijuwade, the late monarch’s grandson, who portrayed Oba Sijuwade as an internationally-minded traditional leader instrumental in showcasing Yoruba culture on a global stage. Whether traveling through countries such as Cuba, Trinidad, or the United Kingdom, he upheld Yoruba traditions fitting for nobility. Purple velvet stood out prominently among his preferred fabrics, reflecting his meticulous fashion sensibility which he honed with assistance from both his spouses and individual stylists. This exhibit will highlight these aspects along with items including commemorative coronation jewelry, travel documents, and famous ceremonial objects displayed at the tribute showcase.

The esteemed cultural historian and curator Dr. Oludamola Adebowale, who is leading the exhibition, highlighted its significance as a cultural gateway. It provides profound glimpses into the life of a monarch known for merging tradition with statesmanship.

During a deeply heartfelt interview, Chief Dele Momodu, who serves as the publisher of Ovation and is part of the planning committee, shared his profound sentiments regarding his personal bond with both the monarch and Ile-Ife. Since moving to and studying in Ile-Ife back in 1966, and subsequently teaching at the College of Arts and Sciences within Ife University, he has always looked up to Oba Sijuwade. In his recollections, Momodu referred to the king along with his distinguished group as "beings sent from heaven." Over time, their professional relationship deepened; he collaborated directly with the ruler and acknowledged him not only as a guiding figure but also as a significant influencer whose modesty, elegance, and commitment to fostering unity continue to be influential even now.

"King Sijuwade was remarkably modest and compassionate. He greatly influenced the present Ooni, with both sharing similar tastes in attire—flowing robes, majestic bearing, and commanding presence," he stated. Momodu voiced significant worry about the diminishing awareness of cultural heroes and underscored the necessity of honoring individuals such as King Sijuwade to safeguard Yoruba heritage and motivate young people.

This decennial celebration serves as more than just an homage; it marks a cultural resurgence. It underscores for both Nigeria and the international Nigerian community that honoring one’s roots can guide the path forward like a compass.
