U.S. Residents Flooded by Robocalls in May: Top Scams Revealed
In May, Americans were targeted with over 4.8 billion robocalls, marking a substantial rise compared to the previous year, as revealed by a recent report.
On Friday, June 6, YouMail published their Robocall Index. The call volume for May decreased marginally by 2.5% compared to April but remained 7% above the level recorded in May last year.
The data from April indicated the largest volume of robocalls recorded since August 2023.
"It’s pleasant to catch a break from the increased robocall frequency expected in 2025,” stated Alex Quilici, CEO of YouMail. “Nevertheless, it’s disheartening that the call volumes remain quite high, necessitating ongoing protection for consumers against these bothersome and occasionally hazardous communications.”
The figures stay elevated, with approximately 165 million robocalls daily and around 1,803 calls every second during May. From January to May, U.S. citizens encountered 23.8 billion robocalls, marking an 11% rise from the corresponding period in 2024.
Although various forms of robocalls decreased in May, scam calls saw a significant increase, with over 690 million such calls being made—upwards of 10% higher compared to April’s figures. Scams along with telemarketing robocalls constituted approximately 55% of all call volumes for May, maintaining roughly the same proportion as seen in April.

- Telemarketing: 1.99 billion calls
- Scams: 690 million calls
In May, the most troublesome campaign revolved around fraudulent phone calls that misleadingly prompted individuals to pay for enhanced visibility on Google searches.
The typical message states, “Our records indicate that your listing either lacks verification or essential details, hindering potential customers from locating you.” To proceed with verifying your Google My Business listing, please press 1 immediately. Should you be the business owner, pressing 1 right away would help us confirm your status. Failure to do so means customers looking for your services via Google won’t see your listing. For immediate verification of your entry, choose option 1. Alternatively, dial (866) 202-3044, and EMG listings will take steps to exclude you from our follow-up calls,”
In May, the marketing initiative inundated customers with over tens of millions of calls by employing tens of thousands of distinct telephone numbers along with minor alterations of identical dialogue scripts.
YouMail mentioned that these calls frequently targeted individuals without any business listings, failed to clearly state the identity of the caller, and employed a different number every time to evade blocklists.
