Tyler Perry’s new Netflix movie lands impressive audience score after dividing critics

Tyler Perry ’s new Netflix film, Straw , has made its debut with a high viewer rating on Rotten Tomatoes even though they failed to win over the critics.

Straw is the latest project from Perry and Netflix’s filmmaking collaboration where the filmmaker takes on roles as writer, director, and producer characteristics included in a long-term, exclusive agreement.

The film features Taraji P. Henson as a single mom who tries to look after her ill child, with support from Sherri Shepherd and Teyana Taylor.

"She’s simply aiming to make ends meet and striving to be an excellent mother for her daughter, but the events in her life have led her to find herself in this predicament," Perry explained to Netflix. Tudum The publication discusses the plotline. "I believe many individuals globally, regardless of whether they identify as Black women or not, will connect with that sense of, 'I've reached my breaking point.'"

Straw arrived at the streaming platform on Friday and presently boasts an "Audience Score" of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. It hasn’t garnered an averaged critics' score from the review aggregator sites yet.

“Currently watching Straw On Netflix, a viewer exclaimed, "This film has deeply moved me in ways few movies have in recent years." Another added, "Even though I understand it’s just a movie, it resonates profoundly when considering how many individuals face immense challenges daily and teeter on the brink of despair."

“I couldn’t be bothered by what others say about Tyler Perry; his film STRAW was amazing!!” noted someone else.

Others particularly commended Henson’s acting in the film.

If Taraji P. Henson doesn't receive an Academy Award for this performance, I'll be up in arms!" declared a devoted follower. "She delivered such an outstanding act in the film; it made me shed tears frequently. The way her character displayed ethics, ambition, composure, and resilience deserves recognition even though she often goes unacknowledged.

“Each scene in this film left me deeply shaken. Taraji P. Henson genuinely ranks among the best actresses of her era,” commented another viewer.

Film critics were not as persuaded by the initiative.

The Guardian Andrew Lawrence suggested that Henson’s performance warranted greater recognition in his two-star critique.

“Yet again it’s Henson who delivers the powerhouse performance while edging from distress to anger to winsome compassion. It’s just a shame that after hiring her for four films now, Perry is still treating her like a speed bag,” Lawrence wrote.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter Lovia Gyarkye characterized the movie as "consistently melodramatic."

Enthusiasts of the [Perry] will be familiar with the mix of stereotypes and clichéd storylines that drive the narrative. Straw "leading to its electrifying finale," writes Gyarkye.

The Washington Post Ty Burr provided a scathing assessment: "Rarely do directors depict the Black American experience with such warmth yet lacking sophistication as Tyler Perry does."
