Trump Warns Musk: Backing Democrats Could Bring 'Serious Consequences'
US President Donald Trump signalled on Saturday that he had no intention of mending fences with his erstwhile ally and campaign supporter, Elon Musk. Trump warned Musk that he might encounter "serious repercussions" should he choose to support the opposition.
During a telephone interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump stated that he does not plan to reconcile with Musk. When directly queried about whether this meant his relationship with the multi-billionaire head of Tesla and SpaceX had ended, Trump replied, "Yeah, I'd say so."
I'm preoccupied with other matters," Trump went on. "As you know, I secured a landslide victory in the election. I offered him numerous concessions well before these events took place. During my initial term, I provided him with several advantages and even rescued his career. Therefore, I do not plan on engaging with him.
The US president likewise delivered a caution as rumours circulated about the possibility of Musk supporting Democratic officials and contenders during the 2026 midterm elections.
"If he proceeds with this action, he will have to face the repercussions," Trump stated to NBC, but did not specify what these consequences might entail. Musk's enterprises hold numerous profitable government contracts.
This development follows a dramatic rift in the relationship between the US president and the globe’s wealthiest individual, sparked by criticisms from Musk regarding Trump's budget bill. These critiques were initially shared via Musk's social media platform, X, earlier in the week.
Musk cautioned that the legislation would lead to an increased federal deficit and labeled it as a "repulsive monstrosity."
Based on the analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this legislation aims to cut both expenditures and tax rates; however, it would result in approximately 10.9 million additional individuals lacking health coverage and could increase deficits by around $2.4 trillion throughout the ten-year period.
On Thursday, Trump took aim at Musk over his robust response to the "big beautiful bill" currently awaiting approval from Congress. Soon after, both parties engaged in harsh personal assaults via social media, leaving the White House and Republican congressional leadership struggling to gauge the consequences of this exchange.
As the exchange grew more intense, Musk proposed that Trump ought to face impeachment. He made an unsubstantiated allegation that authorities were withholding details regarding President Trump’s connections to the notorious paedophile Jeffrey Epstein—a statement which appears to have been withdrawn when he deleted his related tweet mentioning Epstein over the weekend.
In an interview with "Manosphere" comedian Theo Von, U.S. Vice President JD Vance attempted to minimize the conflict. He told Von that Musk was committing a "significant error" by targeting Trump, describing Musk as an "emotionally charged individual" who gets easily upset.
"I hope that ultimately Elon returns to the fold. Perhaps this isn’t feasible at present as he has become extremely radical," Vance stated.
Vance referred to Musk as an "extraordinary entrepreneur" and stated that Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, aimed at reducing public expenditure and resulting in the dismissal or removal of numerous employees, was "highly effective."
The US Vice President said the bill's central goal was not to cut spending but to extend the 2017 tax cuts approved in Trump’s first term.
It’s a solid bill," Vance stated. "But it’s far from flawless.
