SK Group Chairman Apologizes for Major Telecom Data Leak

On May 7, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won issued an apology regarding a recent cyberattack on SK Telecom that resulted in the theft of customers' USIM information. This was his initial response to the security lapse, which happened 19 days prior.
"I genuinely extend my apologies to all those who faced inconveniences because of this incident," Chey stated during a press conference held at SK Telecom’s offices in Seoul.
Chelsey acknowledged that the firm's reaction to the security incident was insufficient, describing it as "disappointing," and pledged complete collaboration with regulatory bodies to ascertain the root cause and avoid additional harm to consumers.
He proposed forming an Information Protection Innovation Committee, made up of outside specialists, to bolster the firm’s cyber defenses. "This initiative will maintain an unbiased viewpoint," Chey stated, highlighting his commitment to prioritize data protection at the same level as safeguarding national interests.
Chey emphasized, "Customer trust forms the bedrock of SK Group." He continued, "This situation compels us to reconsider what is genuinely important to our customers, and we commit ourselves to restoring this trust with unwavering effort."
