Should Runners Reveal More Skin? Star Athlete's Dress Debate at the London Marathon

Is it okay to jog wearing track suits?
Following the conventional London Marathon, an unexpected discussion about gender discrimination has emerged as a contentious issue for the athlete involved.
On September 9th (in Korean time), according to reports from the British newspaper Mail, long-distance runner Holly Archer addressed the controversy surrounding the marathon dresses through a firm statement posted on her social media.
The controversy over marathon attire began during the London Marathon held on April 28th. The event saw a record-breaking number of runners—specifically, 56,640 participants finished the race. Amidst this impressive turnout, one athlete stood out due to their choice of clothing.
Holly Archer secured the silver medal in the women's 1500 meters at the 2021 European Indoor Athletics Championships. This athlete took on her first marathon challenge and finished it impressively within a time frame of 2 hours and 39 minutes, showcasing an indomitable spirit despite being over 31 years old.
However, she faced criticism due to her choice of clothing. Archer participated in the marathon donning his trademark running gear known as 'run buns.' This ensemble resembles a swimwear bathing suit, yet it has become widely accepted within the track and field community for enhancing athletic performance.
Nonetheless, certain traditionalist supporters have ignited debate regarding Archer’s outfit choices. These individuals voiced their disapproval through various online comments including: "There are plenty of clothing shops in London offering stylish options; was dressing properly too much to ask?" “It pains me to witness this,” “Why couldn’t he manage his running differently?” and “Is it necessary for men racing marathons to wear what looks like swimwear?” Professional commentators have further fueled the discussion by drawing parallels between Archer’s wardrobe and typical swimming costumes.
Following this, Archer took to social media and wrote, “Perhaps I should’ve opted for a training outfit?” He expressed frustration over remarks centered around his attire instead of discussing the game’s outcomes or the spirit of competition. Additionally, Archer provided insight grounded in sports science. The temperature on the day of the event climbed to 25 degrees Celsius with humidity reaching 78%. Under these conditions, standard running gear proved impractical.
The debate highlights one aspect that underscores the persistent double standards faced by women in the sporting arena. The choice of clothing for archers isn’t unprecedented within long-distance running circles; numerous top-tier female athletes have opted for comparable garments, emphasizing practicality and athletic performance over societal expectations regarding modesty. Ultimately, this situation reveals how female athletes continue to be judged based on their looks rather than their accomplishments.
Regarding support for Archer, it remains quite strong. A supporter argued, “Those who criticize his outfit choices fail to understand the significance of finishing a marathon within two and a half hours.” Another added, “If my physique resembled Archer’s, I’d sport it daily without hesitation—not just during games!”
The foreign publication 'Pinnacle Gazette' reported that despite facing negative public opinions, Archer remains proud after finishing the marathon. His participation in the London Marathon showcased both his athletic prowess and tenacity. While criticism regarding his attire was disheartening, it also highlighted the necessity for societal shifts in how they perceive women athletes. By continually overcoming sporting obstacles, Archer’s narrative motivates numerous individuals and underscores that talent should be prioritized over physical presentation.
