Senate Weighs in on Tax Reform Reports Wednesday
On Wednesday, the Senate plans to start examining and potentially enacting the Tax Reform Bills.
During the resumed session after the Sallah and Easter recess, Senate President Godswill Akpabio revealed this information during the plenary.
The report regarding the four bills was presented to the Senate by Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, on Tuesday. APC -Niger East).
Akpabio urged the committee to distribute copies of the report to all senators to enable them to study it and be able to make informed contributions during the consideration.
In the meantime, the Senate President has urged legislators to reaffirm their dedication to addressing the escalating security issues and increasing financial difficulties facing the nation.
During his welcoming speech at the resumed parliamentary session, he encouraged other legislators to tackle their responsibilities with honesty, solidarity, and a strong sense of immediacy, as citizens face escalating hunger and instability in Nigeria.
He pointed out major national issues such as increasing expenses, volatility in the energy industry, and growing unrest as critical areas requiring urgent legal action. Meanwhile, he characterized the violent confrontations in the South-East and North-West regions, farmer-herder tensions in the North-Central area, and ecological damage in the South-South region as "the festering sores of the nation."
Akpabio observed that the latest legislative break aligned with Easter and Eid-el-Fitr, times he believes should instill the principles of sacrifice and discipline within public service.
“The burdens on our shoulders are enormous, and no season better prepares the soul to carry such burdens than the one we’ve just passed through,” he said.
He reiterated the National Assembly’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, pledging to enact laws and strengthen oversight to back Executive efforts in stabilising the country.
On the national conversation around electoral and judicial reforms, Akpabio acknowledged citizens’ growing demand for institutional accountability and called on his colleagues to respond with courage and diligence.
"The public is observing. The globe is paying attention. Our voters are watching. And history—quietly vigilant—is taking notice," he stated.
The Senate’s legislative agenda, he said, included bills focused on security sector reform, economic recovery, education, technology, and youth empowerment.
Akpabio likewise highlighted the importance of stringent monitoring of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to guarantee effectiveness and openness.
As he assured Nigerians of the Senate’s dedication, he stated, "Your Senate has resumed operations. We remember your aspirations, your difficulties, and your craving for transformation."
