Policy Shift or Political Distraction? Examining the Procurement Statement
LAGOS – Dr Pearse Adetokunbo Pearse, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member board of Governors of Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI) has said that President Bola Tinubu’s first procurement policy is a political statement designed to divert attention from the burning issues in the country today.
Remember that the President has endorsed the Renewed Hope Nigeria First policy, which requires all federal ministries, departments, and agencies to prioritize Nigerian products and services when utilizing public funds.
Pearse who spoke with Daily Independent noted that the idea of giving priority to Nigerian products in official purchase by government agencies has always been the official position.
He said, “This is another political statement designed to divert attention from the burning issues of today; insecurity, hunger, unemployment and the blatant abuse of democracy; the capture of the rights of Nigerians.
Given the irrelevance and misplacement of this policy: the notion of prioritizing Nigerian goods in official purchases made by government entities has consistently been the stated stance. However, the issue lies in the fact that no governmental agency abides by this regulation, not even the presidential office.
Secondly, prior to banning imports, you ought to support producers by boosting their output. However, this government has not taken any steps to aid local producers; rather, its policies have been unwelcoming to investors who could potentially supply goods for domestic use.
“Hardly any products needed by government agencies are produced locally. They have no option but to either import or buy imported products when they are available locally.
“This policy is nonsensical. It’s designed to give the impression that the President is patriotic when in fact everything he does is to please his foreign bosses, and to satisfy his own greed.
Tinubu believes that by seeming patriotic, Nigerians might overlook the fact that while they lack access to electricity or struggle with rising power costs, he has disconnected himself from the national grid.
In a brazen display of uncaring disregard, Tinubu has squandered billions from Nigerian taxpayers' funds to acquire solar power for himself.
This individual is making every effort to deceive and spread misinformation while avoiding accountability for advancing the nation or addressing any of its issues.
Allow me to repeat the sentiments expressed by Governor Aregbesola, who was once a close advisor to the President: 'Tinubu does not have Nigeria’s best interests at heart.'
