Over 1.5 million candidates score below 200 in 2025 UTME — JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has published the official performance data from the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), highlighting significant insights into nationwide performance patterns.

Based on the statistics, out of the 1,955,069 examinees from all over Nigeria, over 1.5 million obtained scores under 200, which accounts for more than 76% of the entire candidate pool.

On the contrary, merely 4,756 candidates obtained scores higher than 320, whereas 7,658 individuals received scores ranging from 300 to 319.

"This statistical summary provides an extensive overview of this year's UTME results," according to JAMB.

The board refrained from revealing particular reasons for the poor scores but highlighted the importance of "stringent and impartial" examination processes at every center.

The report similarly highlighted a distinctive group within those examined: minors participating as candidates.

According to JAMB, 40,247 underage individuals were granted special permission to sit for the exam in order to demonstrate what the board called “exceptional abilities.”

Nevertheless, out of all the underage candidates, merely 467 — roughly 1.16% — achieved the level of excellence set by the board.

"These candidates will go through three additional evaluation stages prior to any final classification being determined," JAMB stated.

The findings have reignited discussions about student readiness and the standard of secondary education in Nigeria, with teachers and policy makers now considering the significance of these figures.
