Oil spill: HYPREP screens Ogoni people for cancer, others
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project has launched an extensive health study throughout Ogoniland aimed at evaluating the incidence of cancer and various diseases that might be connected with prolonged exposure to hydrocarbons.
This action aligns with the suggestions made by the United Nations Environment Programme, which requested a subsequent health assessment to support the ecological restoration efforts in the area devastated by oil pollution.
Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, the project coordinator for HYPREP, made this announcement when speaking with reporters during the 2025 First Quarterly Key Regulators and Asset Owners Meeting in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
The UNEP report revealed that the inhabitants of Ogoni have faced contamination from carcinogens," stated Zabbey. "This long-term exposure suggests that several individuals might be suffering from cancers." He added, "We aim not just to restore the ecosystem but also to undertake advanced healthcare studies that encompass the social, ecological, and economic aspects of Ogoniland.
He disclosed that HYPREP initiated a socioeconomic study designed to develop a framework for post-cleanup growth in the area.
As part of this initiative, the agency has signed a three-year contract with the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a World Health Organisation body, to conduct human biometric studies across the area.
"We aim to start examining the health condition of the Ogoni population with respect to cancer. Detecting cancer early is crucial for effective treatment, and this research will assist in determining the required healthcare measures," he noted.
To support this health initiative, HYPREP is constructing a specialist hospital in Buan, Ogoniland.
Zabbey states that this facility will be unparalleled in the area, featuring cutting-edge departments such as oncology, infectious disease management, and various other specialized medical services.
"We have recently come back from Germany after completing a factory acceptance test for the upcoming medical equipment supply. I am delighted to share that we will be installing the most advanced MRI technology at the hospital, thereby establishing it as a key center for diagnostic imaging," he announced.
Zabbey highlighted that HYPREP's actions are driven by meticulous planning and a dedication to sustainability, underscoring that outcomes should be robust and meaningful.
He also disclosed that WHO officials are expected in Port Harcourt by mid-July to meet with stakeholders and begin the detailed planning phase of the study.
"They plan to collaborate with the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, local universities, and various key partners. The focus is entirely on partnering for progress," he stated.
During his previous comments, Zabbey highlighted that the quarterly gathering offered a systematic framework for cooperation between regulators, asset holders, and execution partners. This forum allows them to assess the advancement of projects and share insights aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.
"The UNEP's 2011 Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland provided a roadmap for cleanup and sustainable management of hydrocarbon contamination. I am delighted to share that advancements are being made across various areas. Your sustained collaboration remains essential to the achievements of HYPREP," he informed the attendees.
The gathering included participants from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, ministries of Health and Water Resources from Rivers State, along with members from civil society organizations and NGOs.
