NFL Insider Criticized for Misleading Tweet That Spurred Fan Fears of Legendary Anchor's Death

Chris Berman has been among ESPN’s most longstanding workers and is a recognizable figure for sports enthusiasts nationwide in America.

So when word spread that the Connecticut The native has prolonged their agreement with the Worldwide Leader in Sports, undoubtedly making for an celebratory event.

In other words, things were set to proceed normally until fans momentarily grew concerned due to an ambiguously worded tweet from one of Berman's associates.

ESPN's NFL insider, Adam Schefter, tweeted about Berman's new contract, but his wording led many viewers to think he was reporting the 70-year-old's passing.

ESPN veteran anchor Chris Berman, who became part of the network right from its inception on September 7, 1979, has renewed his agreement," Schefter shared.

Using social media terminology, this expression is often how one might start writing an obituary.

Many supporters criticized Schefter’s choice of words and lambasted him on social media over it.

One user commented on X, previously known as Twitter, saying 'My heart skipped a beat after just the first line.'

Another rebuked Schefter: 'never begin a tweet that way again.'

"When it comes to elderly folks, you all should begin tweets like this with 'GREAT NEWS!'," a different user proposed.

The Sleeper fantasy sports app account shared, "Are you attempting to cause us cardiac issues, Adam?"

Berman has been a staple of the network for decades, most notably as a host for 'Sunday NFL Countdown', 'Monday Night Countdown', and 'NFL Primetime'.

Outside the NFL, Berman has held roles for coverage of the Home Run Derby, the Stanley Cup Finals, and golf tournaments like the US Open and the Travelers Championship.

If Berman stays in this role until 2029, he'll be the first employee at the cable television company to have stayed there for 50 years.
