Methane emissions continue to be a significant issue since the worldwide output of oil, natural gas, and coal has maintained the amount originating from the energy sector at over 120 million tons each year.
According to the "Global Methane Tracker 2025" report released by the International Energy Agency, abandoned oil and gas wells along with coal mines accounted for approximately 8 million tons of global methane emissions last year. Combined, these sources rank as the planet’s fourth-highest emitters of fossil-fuel-derived methane.
Current technologies might offer a remedy since they have the potential to prevent approximately 70% of yearly methane emissions originating from the energy industry.
The IEA similarly observed significant variation in methane emission levels among various nations and corporations. Additionally, they pointed out that present commitments from businesses and governments encompass 80% of worldwide oil and gas production; however, merely 5% of this production adheres to a stringent near-zero methane emissions criterion.
The IEA stated, “It is crucial to enhance awareness and disseminate easily accessible best practices to bridge this gap.”
