A peculiar and uncommon shark has been seen near the coast of Gran Canaria, astonishing local fishermen.
The goblin shark was spotted off the coast of San Cristobal in the Canary Islands by fisherman Marcos Hernández and Ramón Santana.
The duo recorded the deep-sea shark on video as it lingered in the water close to their vessel.
Referred to as Mitsukurina owstoni, goblin sharks typically inhabit the depths of the sea and can be spotted at depths reaching up to 3,000 feet or approximately 914 meters beneath the water’s surface.
Occasionally called a 'living fossil,' sharks are renowned primarily for their protruding jaws and pointed snouts.
These characteristics lend the goblin shark a surreal look.
When Marcos and Ramón were fishing at approximately 900 meters or 2,952 feet deep, they saw the creature.

They were searching for hake and deepwater perch back then, according to What’s The Jam.
According to local press, this marks the first confirmed sighting of this species in these particular waters.
Marcos disclosed that he and Ramón, locals from the region, were initially clueless about what it was when they first encountered the goblin shark.
He stated: "When it appeared, we were completely clueless about what it was."
Initially, we believed it was a swordfish due to its snout, but later we discovered it wasn’t.
'The creature had leather-like skin, and upon researching online, we realized exactly what it was.'
The fishermen caught the goblin shark to snap a picture before letting it go back into the sea.
