Adelabu Leads Power Sector Revamp
Minister of\xa0 Power Adebayo Adelabu has unveiled an urgent 10-year\xa0 rescue plan to revive the manpower shortage in the\xa0 electricity sector, mandating the training of not less than 1,200 electrical engineers within the next decade and prioritizing local contractors under a strict “Nigeria First” procurement policy.\xa0
Addressing the kickoff event of the Ministry of Power’s management retreat themed 'Developing the Ministerial Performance Management System (MPMS) for 2025' in Abuja, Adelabu cautioned employees that President Bola Tinubu’s government will not accept justifications for providing consistent electricity to homes and enterprises. He emphasized that reviving this sector is "not up for debate" when it comes to ensuring economic stability.
The announcement from the Minister came after Monday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved an extensive plan aimed at reversing years of deteriorating infrastructure across the nation, even though the country possesses abundant energy resources.
A presidential directive mandating ministries and agencies to grant contracts to domestic companies and foster locally developed talent is set to be implemented shortly.
We can’t continue to outsource our future," Adelabu stated, highlighting a severe lack of skilled professionals. "Over the next decade, we need to replenish the missing cohort of engineers.
Yesterday, Mr. President highlighted the significance of local content, and an executive order is currently being prepared for release. This order underscores the necessity of focusing internally across all activities, specifically when awarding contracts. We should align with these principles in developing our domestic capabilities, utilizing our resources effectively, and nurturing our workforce. Intentional efforts must be made toward enhancing local capacities. The industry lacks skilled individuals, which necessitates immediate corrective actions. Over the coming decade, we aim to train at least 1,200 electrical engineers within the sector to compensate for those who were lost. During this retreat, let’s address each other candidly to achieve tangible outcomes rather than getting bogged down in theoretical discussions,” he urged them.
Adelabu recognized the improvements in grid stability achieved since January 2025 but called for quicker advancements. He disclosed that every ministry’s performance would now be reviewed every quarter by the presidential oversight team.
